Studio Practice - brass Rubbings
I wanted to make my own brass rubbings - they stopped the public from making monumental brasses in churches in 1974 as the process could damage the plate- but they're are brass rubbing centers - I was going to go to the one in London but couldn't with the train strikes. Instead I experimented with layering collage scraps to - stitching into bit to produce interesting textures
I liked the idea of making my own plate / materials to take rubbings from - so I engraved an image of a brass rubbing from my book onto a piece of Lino using a laser cutter , just as a test- id need to use a higher quality image next time to get a more detailed engraving but it turned out pretty well. It felt very precious to have my own version of a monumental brass.
Layering oil pastel I started by layering a piece of calico over the engraving - inspired by the stain glass had seen I wanted the colours to glow so I experimented with layering colours light to dark - then moved onto soft pastels on muslin which have a more ghostly appearance.
